My Miata MIGHT be dead...

So after enjoying the piss out of it (but still not abusing it and giving it lots of time to cool down between runs) from the mountain trip with Desu and Rainbow, I took it to an autocross for one last hoo-yah before classes and to try out the adjustable Koni shocks for competition use. On my second run, I noticed it wouldn’t accelerate coming out of a corner in second gear at 3000 rpm. However, I had a passaenger with me so I thought it was his 200 pound butt slowing me down. Unfortunately, it was the same on my third run without a passenger. Pulling back into the grid, the car stalled when trying to go from a stop and the engine would hesitate noticeably when I tried to rev it. It also ran rich and was backfiring like a rotary when I left off the gas while the engine was under load.

Camshaft position sensor? Nope, replaced with a unit from another running NB2 Miata and no changes. Crankshaft position sensor? Nope, replaced like the first and no changes. Hard-reset on the ECU? Nope, still misbehaving. Let it cool down after towing it back home (105$ ouch) in shame? Nope, might even be running worse. Big Kyle did notice the crankshaft balancer on the front of the engine had a small wobble to it when we moved the intake out of the way for a better view and to access the crankshaft sensor.

This could mean my 1.8L NB2 VVT motor with 75k miles has developed the dreaded crank wobble that supposedly plagues early 1.6L NB Miatas, the rubber on the crankshaft balancer is separating and throwing the engine out of whack, and/or there’s a arc somewhere in my ignition to make it run so rich and rough. On the flip side, if worst comes to worst and the motor’s a goner, then I know of a local Spec Miata shop that has a wrecked ‘03 Miata behind the shop with only 55,000 miles on the engine as a potential replacement.

Not repairable or not worth repairing?

The best case scenario is that the balancer or ignition system is broken and needs replacing, Miata gets back on the road ASAP. The worst case scenario is that the crankshaft is done in and damaged the engine block with it. The middle point is that crankshaft is done in and that’s it...in which case the motor will likely need to be pulled out to access it. So if the engine has to come out, then I will see if the Miata shop will take my motor as a parts motor or potential Spec Miata engine for a discount on that 55k motor.

The Miata will come back no matter what; my family and I have put too much effort, time, and money into it to have the car written off like this after finally achieving what I felt like was the ideal base-level modified Miata for a driving enthusiast.

I had to replace a bad Cam Angle Position Sensor on my 2002 Miata just a couple months ago. Sorry to hear that such a simple fix won’t work for you. Is it not throwing any codes?

Negative, no codes were being thrown when pops used his bluetooth OBDII reader and the check engine light has not turned on (it works, it just isn’t being triggered).

I’ve never heard of a problem with the cranks on the 1.8s, tends to be limited to the early 89-90 cars with the 1.6l and short nosed crank. Is battery good and fuel pressure in spec? Do you have a sticky injector somewhere?

Battery seems to be fine, I never had any electrical issues with it before this all happened. I don’t have the tools to check for fuel pressure or check the injectors. Pops is currently overseeing it while a shop tries to figure out what’s up while I focus on classes and whatnot.

Wait only when it warms up it does this?

The last time it acted up, it was only when it was warmed up. This time, it’s acting the same be it warmed up or even after starting it up cold.
